Ensure your results meet Canadian standards.
If you require DNA paternity results intended for submission in official or legal proceedings, you will need to choose our Legal DNA Testing service. DNA Tests Direct provides court-admissible results accepted by courts across Canada and government bodies such as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
What makes a Legal DNA different?
Unlike at-home test kits, Legal DNA Tests follow a strict chain-of-custody process to ensure court-admissible results. The process includes:
- Verification of each participant's government-issued photo ID.
- Submission of a current passport-style photo of each participant.
- Fingerprints taken at the time of sample collection.
- Witnessed sample collection by an impartial third-party.
This careful process ensures your results are legally valid and officially recognized in legal proceedings across Canada.

Understanding Your DNA Sibling Test Results
The DNA Sibling Test compares the DNA of two individuals to establish the statistical likelihood that they are biologically related as full or half siblings. Unlike a paternity test, which provides a definitive answer, sibling testing is based on probability.
Your report will feature a Combined Kinship Index. This number indicates how likely a sibling relationship is:
- A value greater than 1.0 suggests a biological relationship is more likely.
- A value less than 1.0 suggests a biological relationship is less likely.
The further the index is from 1.0 (either much higher or much lower), the stronger the evidence for or against a sibling match.

Frequently Asked Questions
A DNA Sibling Test determines whether two individuals are likely to be full siblings, half siblings, or unrelated. This test is particularly valuable for Canadians when parents are unavailable for testing due to death, absence, or unwillingness to participate. Common scenarios include siblings separated through adoption or divorce seeking to confirm their relationship, establishing biological connections for inheritance matters, immigration cases requiring proof of sibling relationships, or simply addressing questions about biological relationships within blended families.
Our DNA Sibling Test provides a statistical likelihood rather than the definitive results of a paternity test. The test analyzes up to 27 genetic markers through dual-process testing in our accredited Canadian laboratory. Because siblings share approximately 50% of their DNA (full siblings) or 25% (half siblings), results are presented as a Combined Kinship Index showing how likely the sibling relationship is compared to no relationship. The test is highly accurate but works with probabilities rather than certainties. Whenever possible, we recommend testing the parent directly for more conclusive results.
If test participants live in different cities or countries, we can split the DNA test kit and ship components to separate addresses. Each kit part is individually barcoded for secure tracking, and testing begins once all samples reach our laboratory.
To request a split kit, include the following in the “Additional Information” section at checkout:
“Please send Person A’s kit to [Name, Address] and Person B’s kit to [Name, Address].”
Note: Additional shipping fees apply for multi-address orders.
For legal matters such as court proceedings, child custody, support cases, or inheritance claims, you will need to order the Legal DNA Sibling Test. This test requires a chain of custody procedure to ensure the results are admissible in court. The process includes having DNA samples collected by an impartial third party, proper identification of participants, and samples being directly sent to the testing laboratory.

No, the DNA test kits do not have an expiration date and can be stored indefinitely before sample collection. However, once a sample is collected, it’s recommended to send the kit back to our laboratory for testing within 3 months to ensure the best results.
While testing potential siblings alone can provide valuable information, including one or both parents in the testing significantly increases accuracy. If a parent is available for testing, we strongly recommend including their sample for more conclusive results.
The collection process is extremely simple and painless. Your kit includes easy-to-use cheek swabs (similar to Q-tips) that you gently rub against the inside of the cheek for about 30 seconds. This collects enough DNA for testing without any blood or needles. The process works for everyone, including infants. Our kit includes clear instructions, and our customer service team is available if you need assistance.
